Changes to the H-1B Program Are Coming

On January 31, 2019, the Department of Homeland Security announced two major changes to the H-1B program. Under the final rule, which takes effect April 1, 2019, employers seeking to file H-1B petitions will now be required to first electronically register with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during a designated registration period. Mechelle Zarou to present at Ohio Management Lawyers Association Meeting

Toledo partner Mechelle Zarou will present at the Ohio Management Lawyers Association (“OMLA”) meeting on Thursday, May 3, 2018 on Immigration Law Compliance, Audits and Raids. She will provide practical solutions for employment law attorneys who counsel their clients on I-9 compliance and audits, as well as workplace raids by Immigration Customs and Enforcement.

OMLA is an Ohio non-profit corporation made up of senior labor and employment attorneys whose practices are dedicated exclusively to representing management. Its stated purpose is “[t]o provide an organization and forum for the exchange of information, discussion of common issues and problems, and promotion of the administration of justice with respect to employment, labor, and other areas of law affecting employers.”

USCIS Will Once Again Start Requiring In-Person Interviews for Employment Based Adjustment of Status Applicants

Yesterday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that pursuant to President Trump’s Executive Order 13780, “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States,” it would begin requiring in-person interviews for adjustment of status applications based on employment effective October 1. The U.S. State Department Announces Suspension of Non-Immigrant Visa Operations Across Russia

Due to the Russian government’s personnel cap imposed on the U.S. Mission, all nonimmigrant visa (“NIV”) operations across Russia will be suspended beginning August 23, 2017. Beginning September 1, visa processing will resume on a greatly reduced scale at the U.S. Embassy Moscow, while NIV interviews at the U.S. Consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Vladistok are suspended until further notice.  Beginning August 21, the U.S. Mission will be canceling current nonimmigrant visa appointments countrywide.
